Experts Online: Linking Your CDCs to Local Anchor Institutions
04/25/2008

Event Description

presented by The Field Resources and Learning and Federal Policy Units of LISC and
The National Alliance of Community Economic Development Associations

Faced with declining federal and state community development funding, CDCs are increasingly looking to expand partnerships with local employers. In many cities, the largest local employers are area nonprofit hospitals and universities. • Vickie Johnson, ED , Fairfax Renaissance CDC
  • Steve Dubb, The Democracy Collaborative (moderator)

Topics:

  • Overview of efforts nationwide
  • Review of two exemplary partnerships
  • Challenges of building alliances with large nonprofit institutions
  • Benefits of partnerships

Issues of youth violence and increased gang activity have become a challenge for many communities across the country. 10/26/2007

A new collection of case studies researched and written for the 2007 Affordable Housing Symposium, highlights innovative developers who are tapping non-traditional resources, expanding their scope of work, and offering affordable housing in areas once considered too exclusive or expensive. The case studies highlight four unique tools for affordable housing development: Low Income Housing Tax Credits, the Capital Fund Financing Program, committed and aggressive local agency programs, and mixed-financing. Regardless of their method, these developments help people that are most affected by high housing costs: seniors and low-income working families.

The case studies--in Burnsville, Minn,. Allegheny County, Penn., Charleston, W.Va., and San Diego, Calif.--profile different housing types within different community contexts. Readers are encouraged to apply them as a framework to create and preserve and/or increase affordable housing in their own communities.

Home Field Advantage. Creating Athletic Fields that Promote Healthy Children and Sustainable Communities
09/11/2007

Home Field Advantage

One sure yardstick for the health of a community is the health of its children. For decades, experts in planning, psychology, sociology, and childhood development have been drawing a firm line linking the quality of local recreational areas with the well-being of neighborhoods and their children. That connection is why LISC and the National Football League’s Youth Football Fund joined forces in 1998 to create the NFL Grassroots Program, which invests in modern, durable, welcoming places for children and communities to gather. This report presents case studies illustrating the challenges and the achievements of the NFL Grassroots Program in various communities. In each case, the distinguishing contribution of LISC and the NFL was not just the creation of a much-needed field, but support for the formation of a community endeavor — a common undertaking that links engaged residents and parents, youth programs, and civic, religious, and public institutions in a collective effort to protect and nurture the most precious asset of all: the community’s children.

Experts Online - Pitfalls and Promises of Community Engagement in Comprehensive Change
08/15/2007
One of the most challenging of the Comprehensive Community Initiative (CCI) core concepts, community engagement refers to efforts to involve community residents and neighborhood leaders in the planning, implementation, and assessment of comprehensive initiatives. Community involvement is hard enough to do well in the planning stages of CCIs; what are the best ways to sustain meaningful engagement as initiatives unfold? How can intermediaries, one step removed from on-the-ground organizing, encourage effective community mobilization on the part of lead agencies, without being overly prescriptive?

Experts Online - Partnerships Personified: Success of a 360-Degree Leader
07/25/2007

When Vicki Johnson successfully partnered with the world-renowned Cleveland Clinic in a landmark project for her CDC to develop, own, and manage an international research facility, she had no idea that she embodied the principles of a 360-degree leader. “Putting together the $60 million dollar grant application took months,” she explained, “but building the relationship took more than ten years.”

“Leadership is influence, not position,” writes the venerable John Maxwell. “One may be in a position of authority but this doesn’t make them a leader.” Likewise, those in positions of less authority can be powerfully influential - leading upward, across, and downward within their organizations and across community systems. Learn how Johnson successfully used her 360 degree leadership skills to build and leverage the powerful relationships that are bringing her neighborhood into a global marketplace.

The Experts

  • Vicki Johnson, Executive Director of Fairfax Renaissance Development Corporation, Cleveland, Ohio
  • Moderator: Shelia Slemp, Senior Program Officer, Organizational Development Initiative, LISC

Topics Discussed:

  • Creating and leveraging strong institutional partnerships.
  • Building relationship equity by adding value to those around you.
  • Common “wrong-thinking” leadership paradigms.
  • Overcoming short-term set-backs for long-term gain.
