Duluth Charrette
Char•rette: Collaborative planning & design process that harnesses our creativity, energy and talent to transform our community.
Each year, the Knight Program in Community Building, a Knight Foundation–funded program at the University of Miami (FL) School of Architecture, holds a charrette in a Knight City. With 26 cities to choose from, Duluth was selected as the site of the 2005 Knight Program Charrette.
Duluth’s East Downtown, Hillside and Waterfront Charrette was conducted in July, 2005. Faculty from the Knight Program in Community Building, 13 mid-career fellows (with expertise in architecture, urban planning, real estate development, the arts, economic development, law, landscape design, community development, transportation planning, neighborhood advocacy, etc.), and 11 graduate students conducted the Charrette (a combination of an urban design studio and a town meeting carried out through an intense process over several days).
In order to perpetuate the momentum of the Charrette, Mayor Herb Bergson established the Duluth Charrette Stewardship Group, whose primary role is to prompt consideration and support for the recommendations identified in the Charrette Report and Plan. The Stewardship Group prepared a set of guiding Principles to evaluate proposed projects. Persons interested in proposing a project should complete the Evaluation Form below and submit the completed form to Stewardship Chair Pam Kramer.
