Summary: Greater Kansas City LISC (PDF)
The input of community stakeholders is a fundamental part of Building Sustainable Communities. For example, in Kansas City, local leaders identified the new Children’s Campus of Kansas City as a priority that would improve access to health care for residents and create 250 new jobs. LISC provided $14 million in New Markets Tax Credits to support the effort, which will provide comprehensive child development and family support services to 1,000 young children and more than 500 families each year.
The Children’s Campus is located in one of Greater Kansas City LISC’s NeighborhoodsNOW target areas, in the heart of downtown Kansas City, Kansas. It is the first major center for young children to be built in Wyandotte County in decades and will provide the comprehensive services children need to grow into healthy adults. For the neighborhood, it is, as executive director Margaret Staker said, a “dream fulfilled” and a catalyst for further redevelopment. It is Building Sustainable Communities in action.
