Building Sustainable Communities takes a holistic view of what makes neighborhoods healthy. So in Flint Mich., which has been stung by severe economic dislocation, we supported the Rowe Building for the new homes, businesses, amenities and jobs it would create. Rowe involved the redevelopment and re-use of three existing buildings to create 70,000 sq. ft. of mixed-use space. That includes two new restaurants, two floors of office space, and eight loft apartments. It also includes 250 jobs in an area with staggering unemployment. LISC allocated $6.9 million in New Markets Tax Credits to help fund the $22.7 million redevelopment effort, both for its direct impact and for the groundwork it helps to lay for further revitalization in the area.
