Mixed-income housing and communities are held up as the pinnacle of balanced, equitable development. Mixed-income developments provide housing at a variety of price points affordable to different types of families in the same place. As such it is sometimes referred to as the “holy grail” of neighborhood revitalization, increasing housing production while also achieving affordability goals.
So why aren’t we building more of it in the region? Because it is hard to do. But it is possible – and we have great examples of mixed-income housing to explore right here in Cincinnati, including in the neighborhoods of College Hill, Walnut Hills, and Over-the-Rhine.
We hope these examples give us all the inspiration to create more mixed-income housing and support for mixed-income communities in the Cincinnati region, and to advocate for the kinds of funding and policy changes that will make it easier to do so.
Panelists representing community development corporations and developers will be announced soon. The conversation will be facilitated by representatives from the Cincinnati Development Fund. The Cincinnati Development Fund provides financing for mixed-income projects and is represented on the Housing Our Future Steering Committee.
