NFL Grassroots
Athletic fields are tremendous community assets because they offer recreational and educational opportunities that contribute to the local quality of life, especially for young people. Through the NFL Grassroots Program, a partnership between the National Football League Youth Football Fund and LISC, financing and technical assistance is provided to nonprofit organizations, middle schools and high schools to improve the quality, safety and accessibility of local athletic fields.
LISC’s role with the Houston Texans is to facilitate the grant process. We provide recommendations to the final grant selection committee, distribute the funds and help organizations find matching dollars to meet the project’s budget.
Since 2002, NFL Grassroots has invested $1.25 million in Houston to build or refurbish eleven football fields. The following organizations have received grants:
- 2018 - Yes Prep Public Schools - Gulfton Neighborhood Field
- 2016 - YMCA of Greater Houston (Harriet & Joe Foster Family YMCA)
- 2013 – KIPP Sunnyside High School
- 2010 – Northside High School - formerly Jefferson Davis High School (Houston Independent School District)
