This month’s Community Wise podcast is about the social determinants of health and mental health. LISC KC’s Holly Long sits down with Dr. Denise Dowd, a physician in the Division of Emergency Care at Children’s Mercy Hospital and Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. The two discuss the "Five Social Determinants of Health,” the nonmedical factors that influence health outcomes. These social determinants are the conditions in which people are born, grow, work, live and age, and the wider set of forces and systems shaping the conditions of daily life. Together, Holly and Dr. Dowd examine how these forces and systems include economic policies, social norms, racism, and housing – and if there are any solutions.
The Community Wise Podcast is a conversation between LISC Greater Kansas City Development Officer Holly Long and community thought leaders in the fields of community development, social enterprise and social justice.
