Opportunities to create and preserve more affordable housing abounded at our Getting Creative with Rental Subsidies training on September 6th at the Japanese American Cultural and Community Center. Attendees heard best practices and learned about partnership opportunities from industry experts who specialize in supportive services for vulnerable populations. Hellen Hong, Southern California Region Executive Director of First Place for Youth, discussed how master leases are being used to secure homes for Transition Age Youth (TAY). Justin Dae of Brilliant Corners, a Flexible Housing Subsidy Pool operator, shared the details around how his organization assists developers with long-term project-based subsidy agreements, DHS commitment letters, and design element suggestions that are sensitive to the needs of the developmentally disabled.
The lively Q&A discussion and networking session afterward made it clear that participants walked away with a greater understanding of the creative techniques being used in the industry as well as the contact information of potential partners that can help them get more deals done.
