Community-based Economic Inclusion Project
Despite national economic growth and growing investment activity economic inequity continues to be a threat to the vitality of our cities. Too many Americans still reside in communities struggling to access economic opportunity. This economic exclusion not only harms the vulnerable among us –it harms everybody. As the ranks of Americans struggling to make ends meet grows, regional economies become less competitive. To ensure sustainable growth, all people must be able to contribute to and benefit from opportunity.
Our Community-based Economic Inclusion Project (CBEIP) is developing an integrated approach to better address barriers to inclusive growth and economic mobility. Our goal is to create sustainable pathways for Kensington, Fairhill and Eastern North Philadelphia residents to earn a living and have financial stability.
Our approach is to:
- Engage a cross-section of stakeholders-grassroots to tree tops & local to regional
- Align our values, interests, skills and resources
- Apply existing data and new, community-generated data
- Co-design and co-execute systems-level solutions
The project centers on the value of people, place, and community assets. As a result of the project, target neighborhoods will have increased influence over economic outcomes, greater intergenerational wealth retention, and will see a reduction in the racial wealth gap. CBEIP brings together resident leaders, community-based organizations, city representatives, economic and workforce development agencies.
CBEIP will create a stronger entrepreneurial and small business environment, increased access to quality employment opportunities, and stakeholder engagement in a plan to reduce systemic barriers. Goals will be accomplished by tying regional stakeholders and investment into economic goals and strategies set forward by residents and local community organizations.
CBEIP has three phases:
- Gathering Data and Engaging Stakeholders: Our approach is informed by data and community priorities. A team of economic and urban planning consultants will gather data about the neighborhood and regional and local economy. A team of Resident Advisors will guide the project priorities, share their local knowledge and engage their neighbors. An advisory committee comprised of community-based organization and economic development agencies will also provide guidance and input.
- Developing a Shared Agenda: The teams will identify specific opportunities to for greater inclusion around jobs, small businesses and physical improvements. We’ll co-coordinate programs, strategy and investments.
- Implementation of the Shared Agenda: Alongside both community organizations and citywide partners, the team will agreements for the annual goal-setting and funding of activities. LISC will support the accountability, coordination, and communications necessary to act on the recommendations.
