Health and Housing
On November 8, 2021, Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island announced the results of their third annual RI Life Index survey. Unsurprisingly, housing was identified as a critical need. The RI Life Index survey confirms the dismal data reported in the Housing Fact Book by HousingWorks RI that shows more than a third of RI households - or 140,535 families - are cost burdened. There is not one single municipality where someone making the average median income can afford to buy a home.
Let's change that.
Rhode Island Housing Advocates make the case for housing as the key social determinant of health.
Housing is where LISC started. And it’s still the cornerstone of our mission, even as our vision has expanded to include catalyzing opportunity for people and places in many ways: through education, good jobs, health, safety and economic development. A safe, affordable home is one of the basic requisites of life—a key to individual health and well-being, and the foundation for sustainable, economically vibrant and diverse neighborhoods.
LISC invested $1.1M in predevelopment financing for Crossroad's Summer Street project — far greater than our standard investment — made possible through this program.
