Broadband & Infrastructure
Rural LISC is the human infrastructure moving digital infrastructure forward.
All communities deserve access to the digital infrastructure that allows for full participation in our society, democracy, and economy. Although much of the country has reliable broadband infrastructure, many rural communities still lack access. Rural residents are less likely to have home broadband, own a smartphone, or have multiple internet-capable devices. Rural residents are also much more likely than urban residents to say that accessing high-speed internet connection is a "major problem" in their local community. Broadband access supports small business growth, improves individual quality of life, and drives economic innovation.
Rural LISC believes that in a resilient rural community, digital inclusion means affordable, reliable broadband internet, widely available internet-enabled computer technology and digital skill supports that meet user needs. Achieving this goal requires intentional strategies and investments to reduce and eliminate barriers to access and use technology. In partnership with our generous funders, Rural LISC is promoting a digitally-equitable future through the following programs:
Rural LISC is working to ensure access for all by working with and through communities to identify infrastructure solutions. We work to bring local voices to internet providers to strengthen community investment and help rural towns and counties build broadband development plans that lead to new network deployments.
Rural LISC’s Digital Connectors are individuals who increase their digital literacy skills in order to serve as digital connectors and coaches for others in their communities. They typically already work in roles involving case management or other client-facing services, a model that hinges on trust to promote digital engagement.
With our community-based partners and alongside advocates in the field, Rural LISC supports the development of projects, tools, and case studies to help catalyze the coordination and capacity needed to drive community infrastructure investments.
