HUD Section 4

U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD)’sSection 4 program strengthens the nation's lower-income rural and urban communities by bolstering non-profit community developers that build and invest in those neighborhoods. The program is specifically designed to build the capacity of non-profit community development corporations (CDCs).

Since 2016, LISC San Antonio has worked with over a dozen CDCs to build local capacity and develop leadership among San Antonio area nonprofits.

Project Highlights

American Indians in Texas

As part of the national Making the Invisible Visible Campaign, the American Indians in Texas at the Spanish Colonial Missions has undertaken a demographic data-gathering project to better understand the presence and needs of Native Americans in San Antonio.

LISC provided AITSCM with a HUD Section 4 grant to help make this process possible and to expand the group's organizational capacity and develop leadership. The data collected fills an information gap and helps AITSCM make a difference with their families, as well as supporting services such as small business development training and creating an Arts and Wellness Center.

Housing First

Housing First initiatives focus on getting homeless individuals and families in safe, secure housing; from this stable living environment, they can access services such as medical treatment and education that help them to increase their opportunities and ultimately achieve thier aspirational goals.

LISC San Antonio has worked with the Corporation for Supportive Housing and the Housing First Community Coalition to encourage implementation of housing first programs locally through the development of new units, supporting these efforts with a Section 4 capacity building grant.
