2024 Small Business Perception Survey

This survey of Bexar County residents was conducted by Emerson College Polling and commissioned by Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) San Antonio to learn more about local attitudes regarding small business formation, access to resources, and entrepreneurial aspirations. This survey builds upon baseline data collected in 2022 and will expand local understanding of perceptions around topics such as small business development, entrepreneurship, shopping at locally-owned businesses, financial education, and banking.

LISC SA presented highlights from the survey data at our May 30 Small Business Month event, and we seek input from stakeholders as we plan to repeat and improve this survey on an annual basis.

2022 Housing & Small Business Perceptions Survey

Emerson College Polling conducted two surveys of Bexar County residents in 2022 to gather information about perceptions around housing and homelessness and about personal finance and small business. This survey process has provided vital information to which no one in Bexar County has previously had access, including local attitudes about what residents look for in a house, aspirations to homeownership or entrepreneurship, and where people get their financial information. These surveys are intended to serve as a baseline for regular repetitions of this process and to track perception shifts over time.

Accessory Dwelling Units for San Antonians

Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) are small, naturally affordable and climate-friendly homes tucked discreetly within residential neighborhoods. They’re a great match for smaller households, and can be created through basement or garage conversions, additions, or new construction of back yard tiny homes. ADUs can be paired with affordable housing programs to serve low-income families, other vulnerable populations, and first-time homeowners.

With subject expert Orange Splot, LISC San Antonio has developed this ADU Guide to provide background on what ADUs are, how they can benefit San Antonians, financing issues, and how local development code currently addresses ADUs.

LISC San Antonio is delighted to provide an initial version of this guidebook in 2022; we will update it in 2023 with anticipated changes to the City’s development code. For more information about updates to the UDC, visit San Antonio's Development Services Department.

San Antonio Small Business Ecosystem Assessment

With support from JPMorgan Chase, Common Future and Next Street developed and released a Small Business Ecosystem Assessment in late 2020. This study found a historic, unmet annual demand of about $8.3 billion in capital for small businesses in Bexar County, a shortcoming that is particularly acute for local businesses owned by people of color. Small business owners and business support providers discussed the San Antonio small business community's most pressing needs, the greatest opportunities for impact, and how we can work towards narrowing racial gaps in small business ownership, revenue, and employment across Bexar County.
