What you need to know

Whether you want to be a part of the Classic or the Economic Mobility Corps (EMC) program, to participate with AmeriCorps you must:

  • Be at least 17 years old and a-US citizen or permanent resident of the United States.  
  • Possess a high school diploma or GED. If you do not have either, you will be asked to commit to obtain a GED by the end of your service term. 
  • Be eligible to receive the education award if you have previously served with any national service program.
  • Consent to a complete to a criminal history check which is required for all candidates. The presence of a criminal record does not mean a person cannot serve. However, any  individual who is a registered sex offender or has been convicted of murder cannot serve in any AmeriCorps program.  
  • Participate in all training and cohort meetings hosted by the program.  
  • Participate in national days of service throughout the year. 
  • Have an interest in and ability to work with diverse groups of people, including community members in disinvested neighborhoods. 
  • LISC does not provide relocation assistance.

Benefits of serving

  • All members who successfully complete their term of serve are eligible for an education award. The award cannot be redeemed for cash, but only can go towards specific expenses related to education. For more information on the Eli Segal Education Award, click here.
  • Health and childcare benefits are available to full-time (1,700 hour) Classic and EMC members. Dependents are not eligible for health care benefits. Childcare eligibility is determined by state guidelines and set by an external agency.
