Partner: Mendocino County Sheriff's Office
Focus areas: Community Engagement, Intimate Partner Violence
Mendocino is a county of 86,749 residents spread across 3,506 square miles along California’s scenic northern coast. The Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office faces significant challenges in addressing persistent violence, especially issues related to domestic violence, in two hot spots: the Covelo area, and the Manchester–Point Arena area. Both are isolated within the mountainous terrain and distant from sheriff’s office duty stations.
Mendocino County is using RVCRI funding to support the placement of resident deputies in these communities. Resident deputies provide a consistent presence in the communities, supporting engagement and investigation efforts. Funding is also supporting the acquisition of crime analysis software, which will aid the sheriff’s office in its effort to better understand the patterns and drivers of violent crime within the county’s hot spots.
RVCRI is an effort funded by the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) to assist rural communities seeking to address violent crime.
The DOJ Bureau of Justice Assistance is supporting data-driven, comprehensive responses to crime in some of the country’s most troubled communities through BCJI.
