Funded by the U.S. Department of Justice Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, the Comprehensive School-Based Approach to Youth Violence and Victimization Program supports comprehensive efforts to address youth violence and victimization through the implementation of evidence-based prevention, intervention and accountability efforts in a school-based setting. The goals of the program are to (1) reduce the incidence of school violence through accountability efforts for offenders; (2) respond to victimization, exposure to violence, and trauma as a result of violence that occurs in the school, community, or family; (3) improve school safety and climate; and (4) prevent violence, delinquency, and victimization in the targeted community. A cohort of eight project sites received funding in fiscal year 2019 to provide direct services to youth.
LISC Safety & Justice is the national training and technical assistance provider for the Comprehensive School-Based Violence and Victimization Program. LISC staff and subject matter experts work with the project sites to formulate and implement their plans, and provide group training in topics related to school-based violence and victimization.
School-based violence prevention programs have a profound effect on the lives of students. These high-touch efforts focus more on intervention and prevention than punishment. They incorporate mentoring and other services that help students address trauma and other causes of violence and cultivate a sense of success and belonging. Ultimately, such efforts help disrupt the school-to-prison pipeline that exists in too many underinvested school districts.
