Baldwin House Cooperative
About the project
Baldwin House Cooperative Association is a newly formed entity organized by Baldwin House Community Collective, a group of activists and neighborhood stakeholders dedicated to ensuring that DC's lowest income residents have a place to call home amongst DC's changing landscape.
Baldwin House Cooperative Association is located in the Columbia Heights neighborhood of Washington, DC.
LISC provided Baldwin House Cooperative a $2.20 million acquisition and predevelopment loan through LISC DC's Preservation Fund to purchase a mixed-use property with six residential units and a ground floor commercial space in the Columbia Heights neighborhood. The Cooperative intends to convert the ground floor space into two additional residential units for a total of eight affordable, for-sale condos in an increasingly unaffordable neighborhood.
“We wanted to show that a community can come together to secure land and create community spaces in service of and governed by the people… two years later, the building is in control of a group of talented co-op members supported by the broader Baldwin House community.”
