Baxter Academy for Technology and Science
About the project
Baxter Academy for Technology and Science (BA) is a stand-alone charter high school founded in 2013. Baxter Academy is the only open-enrollment (i.e. non-selective) Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math –focused (STEM) school in Maine. Its innovative model focuses on STEM curriculum and project-based learning that solves “real-world” problems, and provides a unique opportunity for students to learn with more student agency than a traditional public high school model.
Baxter Academy for Technology and Science is located in Portland, Maine.
LISC purchased a 50% participation interest in Nonprofit Finance Fund’s $3.00 million loan to Baxter Academy for Technology and Science. The loan provided financed tenant improvements for its new campus. The loan also allowed BA to relocate to a new facility, and consolidate the two locations the school operated out of at the time of closing. The new facility accommodated its growing enrollment from 346 students to 400 students, serving grades 9-12.
