Bay Area Technology Charter School
About the project
A dedicated group of scientists and engineers opened Bay Area Technology School ("BayTech") in 2004 to provide a STEM-themed secondary school in Oakland. BayTech strives to shape futures by preparing students for academic success, enabling students to have a broad spectrum of options for their future endeavors, and preparing students to be responsible and productive citizens.
BayTech is located in Oakland, CA.
LISC provided $2.27 million in financing to Bay Area Technology School for predevelopment and acquisition costs related to acquiring and rehabilitating a permanent facility in Oakland, CA. The permanent location will provide BayTech stability for planning and strengthening its educational program. In the 2022-2023 school year, BayTech will serve 340 6-12th grade students and employ 52 full-time staff who earn a living wage and are offered benefits. BayTech serves more students with special needs than any other charter school in the Oakland Unified School District, and 75% of their students qualify for free- or reduced-price meals, are in foster care, experiencing homelessness, or learning English. LISC's investment in BayTech supports increased access to high-quality public schools as an essential part of community development.
