Brain Science, Trauma and Supporting Change

Overview

Just as BCJI site’s violent crime challenges are complex and have evolved over time, individuals at the center of community violence are likely to have encountered several unique traumatic experiences that shaped their life path. This training session will introduce the basics of brain science, how trauma impacts the brain, and how it is possible to heal and change over time. Through this session, participants will begin to understand why we do what we do, how stuck we get in cycles and how that impacts our everyday reactions and behaviors. Participants will also learn about strategies that program partners and individuals at the center of violence can employ that support long-term behavior change. This session will challenge participants to consider how brain science can be used to inform and design more effective interventions to reduce and prevent violence.
