Children's Home of Virginia Baptists Campus
About the project
The Children’s Home of the Virginia Baptists, Inc. (CHVB) was established in 1947 to meet the needs of not served and underserved African American children. Its goal was to establish not only a residential care facility for orphans, but a facility that would respond to the total developmental needs of children and their families.
CHVB's facility is predominantly used by groups in immediate area, including Petersburg, Hopewell and Colonial Heights, but serves groups throughout the state of Virginia as well.
LISC provided $1.40 million to refinance CHVB's existing mortgage and provide funds for rehabilitation and FF&E of the facilities. In order to address the needs of the modern community and maintain the organization's focus on African-American children and their families, the Home intends to evolve into a Children's Cultural Arts Center; a Techonology Training Facility and Laboratory; a Sports/Exercise program for both youth and senior citizens; a retreat for churches and local businesses; and a Neighborhood Family and Recreation Center. The Home will also offer full-service day care, before and after school programs and evening childcare.
