Culturally Driven School Safety Strategies

This webinar is part of a series on the Comprehensive School-Based Violence and Victimization Program from LISC Safety & Justice and the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP). DOJ OJJDP provides national leadership, coordination, and resources to prevent and respond to youth delinquency and victimization.

Overview

Schools that are intentional about building upon cultural strengths and values of its students and families can improve student and family connection to schools. This webinar explores ways schools can partner with community-based agencies to engage and support its native Spanish speaking populations through two innovative and culturally specific programs, El Joven Noble and Promotora/es de Salud.

El Joven Noble is a curriculum-based program, typically for young males, that offers a safe space to heal from several risk factors such as community violence, home violence, personal or familial connections to substance abuse. Promotora/es offers schools opportunities to connect with community health partners to engage female leaders of the house, building their capacity to address social determinants of health at home to increase student participation/connections and reduce truancy and behavioral challenges.
