Family Food Center
About the project
The sponsor of this project, Manhal Zaitona, is a local entrepreneur and the owner of five grocery stores in Michigan and Ohio. He has 15 years of experience in the grocery business. The Family Food Center is located in Toledo, Ohio.
LISC provided an $800,000 mini-permanent loan to assist Mr. Zaitona to acquire the real estate at 1212 N. Detroit Ave., which includes the existing Family Food Center grocery store owned and operated by Mr. Zaitona. The funds contributed to store upgrades, such as energy-efficient HVAC units, shelving, and refrigeration and freezer cases, as well as interior and exterior renovations to the property.
This LISC loan helps build a more prosperous and inclusive community. Family Food Center is located in a neighborhood that is struggling with blighted and vacant properties, a 31% poverty rate, and few retail options. Mr. Zaitona, himself an immigrant entrepreneur, makes efforts to hire neighborhood residents, helping build trust and social cohesion among immigrants and the predominantly African American community.
