National Public Housing Museum
About the project
The National Public Housing Museum was incorporated in 2007 as an institution devoted to telling the story of public housing in the United States. Wielding place, stories, and memories as their tools in the fight against homelessness, The National Public Housing Museum engages with policies - past, present, and future - to spread awareness and galvanize change in the Chicago community and beyond.
The National Public Housing Museum is located in Chicago, IL.
LISC provided $300,000 in predevelopment financing to renovate the last remaining public housing building from the Jane Addams Homes development on the West side of Chicago into a museum that will reflect the history of public housing and federal housing policy. The development of the 80,800 square foot museum will create 45 construction jobs, and when fully operational, an additional 11 full time jobs and 10 new part-time jobs will be offered to public housing members and other Section 3 holders. The museum is also expected to attract more than 50,000 visitors annually, and will include a gallery and event area in addition to a Youth Entrepreneurship Hub.
