Place Based Strategies for School Safety

This webinar is part of a series on the Comprehensive School-Based Violence and Victimization Program from LISC Safety & Justice and the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP). DOJ OJJDP provides national leadership, coordination, and resources to prevent and respond to youth delinquency and victimization.

Overview

Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) is an approach that focuses on improving the design of the built environment to help reduce opportunities for disputes and violence and promote positive behavior. Some environmental features, such as the physical design of a space, the number of people in the space, and how the space is being cared for and used are linked to violence and crime. School staff, administration, students and users of school space can play a valuable role in identifying locations in and around the school where users do not feel safe/secure and using the CPTED principles, consider site design modifications that improve territoriality, access management, surveillance, etc.
