School Safety and Wellness Spaces
This webinar is part of a series on the Comprehensive School-Based Violence and Victimization Program from LISC Safety & Justice and the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP). DOJ OJJDP provides national leadership, coordination, and resources to prevent and respond to youth delinquency and victimization.
Overview
Schools are increasingly adapting how they utilize physical spaces in their buildings to support safer and healthier learning environments for their students. In a time where students are reporting higher levels of anxiety, students and schools are looking towards opportunities to create wellness rooms that can be utilized by students before, during, and after school. These wellness rooms provide space for students to become emotionally regulated so they can safely return to learning. Wellness rooms may take several different forms, but typically are staffed with personal trained to support students in crisis. They may be places where students are sent as an alternative to formal discipline and/or may be a place students voluntarily enter to independently manage their emotions through a variety of wellness techniques, such as meditation, music, art, etc. This webinar will include an exploration of the various types of wellness spaces being used, staffing for rooms, and examples from two CYVP sites.
