This webinar is part of a series for the STOP School Violence Specialized Training and Technical Assistance (TTA) Program. Through this program, LISC is helping schools and community partners understand the foundational elements of community violence intervention approaches and sharing guidance on planning and implementing school-based CVI strategies. This program is funded by the U.S. Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Assistance.

Overview

Spokane RISE Mentoring engages youth with school conduct issues that would otherwise result in a suspension or expulsion. This webinar showcases steps taken to support students most likely to be disconnected from school prior to graduation. Spokane school leaders share the impact of RISE Mentoring, lessons learned, and how the model can support a CVI approach. In addition, leadership from Spokane Public Schools highlights the elements required to plan and implement RISE Mentoring Program including:

  • How data are used to prioritize the specific schools where RISE Mentors and how students are referred
  • Ways mentors engage with students and families to eliminate stressors that can negatively impact behavior
  • How mentors model language and skills to help students communicate with their families and with school staff
  • The role of mentors in supporting school efforts to de-escalate and re-direct students in crisis
