Up to 50 percent of chronically homeless adults are estimated to have been homeless as youth, yet little research has been done to study youth homelessness. With that in mind, LISC’s Pay for Success team is working to scale up a promising program in the Washington, DC area. Working with the Latin American Youth Center, this PFS project will take LAYC’s Promotor Pathway Model®, an evidenced-based case management program designed for disconnected and disengaged youth facing multiple obstacles, to the next level.

Fourteen years ago a desperate plea for help turned into Safe Families for Children, an organization that provides families with volunteer hosts who can care for children on a short-term basis. Now, with support from LISC and it’s Pay for Success program, Safe Families will not only expand geographically, but will also increase how many families can find support.

Since 2008, the Latin American Youth Center in Washington D.C. has reached out to address the needs of disconnected youth—16- to 24-year-olds who are out of school and out of work—through its successful Promotor Pathway program. Using the innovative Pay for Success model, LISC is helping expand on that success in order to serve even more at-risk youth in eastern D.C. neighborhoods.

With a $1.33 million grant to deploy the innovative Pay for Success model, LISC is helping scale promising programs that benefit communities in all kinds of ways. For starters, we’re working in Michigan to broaden the reach of the Diabetes Prevention Program, which has a national track record in reducing incidence of the disease and its debilitating impact on low-income communities of color.
